Can You See Milford Sound / Piopiotahi Without a Cruise?

There are many ways to explore Milford Sound without a cruise. You can drive, enjoy scenic walking tracks and more.

You sure can.

Driving the Milford Road to Milford will be one of the most scenic experiences on Te Waipounamu / South Island. Be sure to leave time to stop for photos. Eglinton Valley, Mirror Lakes, Monkey Creek, the Homer Tunnel and The Chasm are some highlights along the way.

Once you're in Milford, take a few short walks. Milford Foreshore Walk is an easy 30-minute scenic walk that starts near the main visitor car park. Go on this walk for the best view of Mitre Peak. Milford Sound Lookout Track is a short 10-minute walk. Pass Donald Sutherland's grave and take the steps to impressive views of Milford Sound.

Gertrude Saddle is a 7 km return walk along rocky terrain that takes 4-6 hours. This is the perfect walk if you're an experienced tramper in good weather. If you're not, we've got you covered with more options.

If you're up for a multi-day walk, the four-day Milford Track is 53.5km and is one of New Zealand's Great Walks. This track ends at Sandfly Point, where you'll have stunning views of Milford Sound / Piopiotahi from your boat ride to Deepwater Basin in Milford Sound.

Avoid the crowds on the cruises and kayak from the boat ramp at Deepwater Basin. There are options for everyone, ranging from short trips to multi-day expeditions for beginners and experts.

Skip the traffic, enjoy seamless travel, and forget about finding parking. Experience the breathtaking beauty of Milford Sound / Piopiotahi from above on a scenic flight departing from Queenstown Airport. A scenic flight is the fastest and most spectacular way to reach Milford Sound. Fly over Lake Whakatipu, glide above the Southern Alps, and venture into Fiordland National Park. Soar above stunning waterfalls, glaciers, peaks, valleys, glacial lakes, and rivers.
